Revival Defined

In revival, God moves in the district.  The whole community becomes God conscious.   The Spirit of God grips men and women in such a way that even work is given up as people give themselves to waiting upon God.

His Presence was in the homes of the people, on meadow and moorland, and even on the public roads."

This presence of God is the supreme characteristic of a God-sent revival.   Of the hundreds who found Jesus Christ during the above revival time, fully seventy-five per cent were saved before they came near a meeting or heard a sermon by any preacher.  The power of God, the Spirit of God, was moving in operation, and the fear of God gripped the souls of men - this is God -sent revival, as distinct from special efforts in the field of evangelism.

An evangelistic campaign or special meeting is not revival.   In a successful evangelistic campaign or crusade, there may be hundreds or even thousands of people making decisions for Jesus Christ, but the community at large remains untouched, and the churches continue much the same as before the outreach.

Revival and Evangelic Campaigns.

When men in the streets are afraid to open their mouths and utter godless words lest the judgments of God should fall; when sinners, overawed by the Presence of God tremble in the streets and cry for mercy; when, without special meetings and sensational advertising, the Spirit of God sweeps across cities and towns, and holds men in the grip of terrifying Conviction; when "every shop becomes a pulpit; every heart an altar; every home a sanctuary" and people walk softly before God, this is Revival!

Heaven-sent revival is not religious entertainment, where crowds gather to hear outstanding preachers and musical programs; neither is it the result of sensational advertising.   In a God-sent revival you don't spend money on advertising; people come because Revival is there!   Revival is an "awareness of God" that grips the whole community, the roadside, the tavern, the church, become the places where men find Christ.

Here is the vast difference between our modern evangelistic campaigns and true Revival.

In modern evangelistic campaigns, hundreds may be brought to a knowledge of Christ and churches experience seasons of blessings, but as far as the community is concerned little impact is made; the taverns, dance halls, and movies are still crowded, and the godlessness marches on.

But, in revival, the Spirit of God, like a cleansing flame, sweeps through the community.  Divine conviction grips people everywhere; the strongholds of the devil tremble, and many close their doors, while multitudes turn to Christ!

March 1921, East Anglia.

March 1921, saw the beginning of revival in the area of East Anglia, England:

At the time, ministers of most denominations were evangelising.   Revival meetings multiplied in the fishing centre of Yarmouth, and elsewhere.   Scottish fishermen working out of Yarmouth in the winter were strongly impacted.

On a Saturday night, a young man stood up on the fish tables after the catch was completed, and preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Immediately men and women everywhere were convicted by the Spirit of God. 
Men and women kneeled crying out for mercy.

The following week, the Scottish fishermen boarded boats to return home.  Where ever they called into port, they took the revival fire with them, all the way to Scotlands fishing towns and villages that Summer.  The returning fishermen were not preachers, the Holy Spirit who accompanied them, convicted men and women as the fishermen travelled North.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ:

The true Gospel of Jesus Christ is that which the Apostle Paul states in
1st Corinthians Chapter 15, Verses 1 to 4:

Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the Gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.  For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received:  that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.
